Direct access to physical therapy was shown to be associated with lower costs and fewer visits for patients

October 21st, 2011

A new study recently published showed that direct access to physical therapy was associated with lower costs and fewer visits for patients as opposed to those who saw a physician first.  The primary findings of the Health Services Research article showed that “Self-referred episodes had fewer PT visits (86 percent of physician-referred) and lower allowable amounts ($0.87 for every $1.00), after covariate adjustment, but did not differ in related health care utilization after PT”.  This is a huge step towards direct access and autonomy for the physical therapy profession.
